According to the US Office of Personnel Management, a Subject Matter Expert (SME) is "a person with bona fide expert knowledge of the responsibilities, duties, day-to-day functions, competencies/KSAs, and requirements of a position. First level supervisors are normally good subject matter experts (SMEs). Superior incumbents in the same or very similar positions and other individuals can also be used as SMEs if they have current and thorough knowledge of the position."
A Configuration Management Subject Matter Expert (CMSME™) is someone who has learned the many CM principles and techniques required to implement CM in various functional areas within an organization. They have extensive knowledge and experience in the field and remain current in the latest CM developments. They may be seen as experts on configuration management within their organization.
CMPIC LLC provides the only CMSME™ program that prepares professionals with extensive training and opportunities to remain current in the field of configuration management.
Only professionals who have been working with CM processes for over five (5) years may apply to this program. Members will go through a series of classes to understand the history, principals, techniques, industry standards, and current trends within configuration management. After which, members will pledge to remain current in CM by participating in professional development courses or conferences every few years.
